This workshop will provide information on how to text captioning for audio and video resources using the W3C SMIL specifications for people with disabilities. Real Media, Quicktime and Internet Explorer all support the use of SMIL to create text captions. Windows Media Player supports a proprietary captioning feature called SAMI (Synchronized Accessible Media Interchange) to provide text captioning, but SMIL can be used in conjuntion with Internet Explorer to create captions for Windows Media Player. The workshop will review the accessibility features of multimedia players, authoring techniques to include text captioning information in presentations, and how to format text cpationing to represent speech and non-speech sounds.

Jon Gunderson is currently the Coordinator of information technology accessibility for people with disabilities at UIUC in the Division of Rehabilitation Education Services. He has been working in the area of web accessibility for over 6 years and is chair of the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative User Agent Accessibility Guidelines working group. He has given numerous presentations and has taught several courses on designing universally accessible web resources.
